There are two approaches to saving money on dental services.

The first option is to find a quality dental discount plan that you have access to dentists that participate. These plans can save you lots of money with no waiting on most all procedures. The down side is that not all dentists accept the plans, and the dental office that do take them tend to rather busy.  These plans generally start at around $12/month for a single and $30/month for a family. If you live in metro Atlanta, we have found the Assurant Denti-Care Select plan to be a great option.

The second approach is real dental insurance. These are more expensive, but let you essentially choose your own dentists. The other drawback is that there are typically waiting periods of 6-12 months for restorative procedures, and they have deductibles and annual caps. Personally, we would rarely recommend a dental insurance product.  Plans of this type generally start at $27/month for a single and $79/month for a family.

Some individual health plans come with a dental plan option. Coventry has a Delta Dental discount plan included. Aetna offers an optional plan, but you must get their health plan with it. Blue Cross sells a stand alone plan, or it can be added to their health plan.

Most dental plans do little for orthodontics or oral surgery. Pediatric dentistry can also be challenging to cover well. Having a HSA eligible health plan is a good way to save on your dental work.
